COURSE AIMS

A1. The aim of education is to provide a student with knowledge, skills and competences in the field of microeconomics.

A2. Acquisition by a student of ability to conduct observations and analyses of phenomena occurring in basic economic entities and in individual markets of goods and factors of production, to interpret economic indicators applied in this area, and to observe and analyse economic phenomena using tools characteristic of economic sciences.

A3. Development by a student of competences in the area of microeconomic thinking and acting in an entrepreneurial manner, cooperation and teamwork, including taking different roles in a team.

L 1- Process of management. Economic choice.

Objective of management. Production, distribution, consumption. Short and long term limit of production capacity. Model for optimisation of microeconomic decisions.

L 2- Market and market economy.

Exchange and market. Market mechanism. Model of market economy. Law of demand and law of supply. Multivariable demand function and supply function.

L 3- Market balance.

Static and dynamic models of market balance. Model premises.

L 4- Flexibility of demand and supply.

Determinants of demand and supply. Flexibility of demand: simple price, mixed price, income price. Flexibility of supply. Economic interpretation of the flexibility of demand and supply.

L 5- Theory of consumer choice part I

Market demand and individual demand. Utilitarian concept of consumer choices. Total utility and marginal utility. Consumer surplus and paradox of value. Goods as a source of utility.

L 6- Theory of consumer choice part II

Consumer preferences. Consumer balance with budgetary constraints. Consumer optimum. Impact of price changes and income changes on consumer balance. Substitutional and income effect of price changes.

L 7- Theory of an enterprise. Part I

Costs of an enterprise. Model of an enterprise and costs. Costs and spendings. Types of costs in an enterprise. Short and long term costs of an enterprise. Returns to scale. Producer optimum. Profitability threshold.

L 8- Theory of an enterprise. Part II

Production function. Technical properties of production. Choice of a short term optimum production technique. Production function and long-term cost.

L 9 – Theoretical forms of market.

Model of perfect competition. Imperfect competition. Monopoly. Oligopoly.

L10 – Markets of factors of production.

Land market. Labour market. Capital market

PC 1- Basics of the theory of market. Analysis of demand and supply.

Idea of demand and its determinants. Supply and its determinants. Market balance. Measuring the flexibility of demand and supply - economic interpretation.

PC 2- Theory of utility.

Household as an economic entity. Demand of a household. Engel's laws. Choice between goods - development of a market basket. Impact of income on the demand of a household. Impact of price changes on the demand of a household. Gosseen's First and Second Laws.

PC 3- Idea and characteristics of an enterprise in the market economy.

Institutional organisational forms of enterprises: individual owner enterprise, companies and partnerships and their types, state-owned enterprises, co-operative enterprises, corporate forms of enterprises.

PC 4- Theory of production.

Function of factors of production. Total, marginal and average productivity of factors of production. Aggregation, selection and substitution of factors of production in the production process: isoquants, isocosts, marginal rate of technical substitution.

PC 5- Theory of costs.

Concept of costs of production. Accounting costs and economic costs. Classification of costs of production. Function of costs. Costs and size of production. Benefits and costs of production scale.

PC 6- Models of market structures.

Characterisation of market models. Perfect and imperfect competition. Market structure from the demand-side perspective. Oligopolistic market structures. Monopolisation and technical progress.

PC 7- Rules of production-related decision making.

Total revenue, average revenue and marginal revenue in the conditions of perfect competition and pure monopoly. Balance of a perfect competition enterprise. Balance of pure monopoly.

PC 8- Capital market.

Structure of financial market. Financial institutions of capital market. Process of investing in the capital market. Segments of the securities market. Financial instruments of capital market.
